About Ivan J. Wasserman

Ivan Wasserman serves as Managing Partner of Amin Wasserman Gurnani and is one of the nation’s premier attorneys for health, wellness, beauty, and other consumer products. Companies of all sizes making, marketing, and selling food, dietary supplements, cosmetics, over-the-counter drugs, and medical devices praise the depth of Ivan’s knowledge and experience, his humor, and his ability to maintain the human perspective while leading them through this heavily regulated landscape. With a unique combination of legal acumen, marketing savvy, deep industry knowledge, and creativity, he has been involved in countless successful product launches and innovative marketing campaigns.

Ivan advocates for clients subject to the often overlapping jurisdictions of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. When advertising disputes arise, he represents companies before the National Advertising Division (NAD) and the Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council (DSSRC). Ivan is also regularly involved in regulatory due diligence in connection with mergers, acquisitions, and investments.

Clients benefit from the years of experience Ivan gained at some of the country’s leading law firms, where he represented brand name manufacturers, direct-to-consumer marketers, and retailers in product development, advertising, and labeling, product safety, and recalls. He responds to FDA warning letters and FTC investigations, prepares 510(k) premarket notifications for medical devices, and advises clients on designing clinical research to substantiate claims.

Ivan has been recognized in Best Lawyers®  in America since 2007. He is ranked in Chambers USA and is rated by Martindale-Hubbell AV [Preeminent]. He was also awarded the 2017 Lexology Client Choice award for exemplary client service in Healthcare and Life Sciences in the District of Columbia.

Ivan is a sought-after speaker at leading industry and legal conferences on advertising and labeling regulatory developments and enforcement trends impacting the health and wellness, cosmetic, and food and beverage industries. He serves as counsel to the International Probiotics Association and is often quoted in national business and trade media, providing expert commentary and bylined articles.

During his downtime, Ivan enjoys relaxing with his wife, dog, and three daughters, whom he is educating on the nuances of his area of specialty. In this article, he describes their discussions on why it is legal to call a martini “dry” and the actual fruit content of Froot Loops. Ivan is also the world’s best and only “Probiotic Comic.” It’s been said that “anyone that can make probiotics funny must find legal creativity easy.”
